ANTHRAX: 'Chicago Is The Heavy Metal Capital Of The United States!'
May 28, 2004ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian (guitar) has told Daily Southtown that he and the rest of his band firmly believe "Chicago is the heavy metal capital of the United States!"
"We've proved it by recording and praising Chicago on our DVD and our record," Ian said. "And we're coming back for like the fifth time in less than two years."
"It's the best audience," he continued. "You know when you go to certain places how great the crowd is going to be. For us, playing in Chicago is really the only American city that is on the level of what it's like with some of the European cities or other places in the world.
"I couldn't tell you why, but I just know that every time we play there it's amazing," he said. "L.A. and New York are both great places to play as well, but there's just an energy level Chicago's (been) at the last seven years or so. It's taken the lead. I would judge all audiences in the states by the Chicago audience."
Even though Chicago is a major music hub for concerts year-round, Ian said fans still appreciate seeing an ANTHRAX show time and again.
"The old cliché about any major city, whether it be Chicago, New York, L.A., London or Tokyo, is that these are the worst places to play because they get to see every band and there's five shows a week," he said. "Whereas if you go to a smaller city that never gets to see anybody, well they're hungrier so it's crazier. While there is truth to that, we plays lots of real small places. Those shows are great as well. That cliché never worked for us." [Read more]
